Cranborne Audio Carnaby HE2 - cutting edge tech!

January 2025 and I acquired this outboard device for the studio. It has been in my eye for many months as Cranborne Audio seemed to have designed a genuinely new circuit and it's certainly attracted a great deal of attention.

So what is it? Cranborne call it an harmonic equaliser. Basically you choose the range of frequencies you want to process (bass, middle, high frequencies) and then add what we call saturation which is adding frequencies to the incoming signal to enhance the tonality of the audio. Saturation is best thought of as musically harmonious mild distortion.

After installing the device, my initial trials on various sources - bass guitar, guitar, piano, vocals, drums and full mixes - had me amazed and very satisfied at the enhancements that are possible.

The other benefit of the design is that it is fully controllable from the computer, and it's settings can be saved per song in the computer. That follows a paradigm that is increasingly being seen in hybrid studios.
