Audient Oria Room Correction
So what's all this about? Sound treatment in a studio has two main components. Soundproofing and Internal acoustic treatment. These are completely different. Soundproofing is to remove leakage of sound both into the studio, and escaping to outside of the studio. This basically involves a heavy airtight structure that is Wall - Space - Wall often referred to as a 'room within a room'.
On the other hand, the internal acoustics of the studio has no bearing on soundproofing - it is all about accuracy of what the mix engineer hears at the mix position seated at the mix console, and the acoustics of the space in which the musicians perform. This is achieved by the use of wall-mounted absorbers and diffusers. The former absorb sound, the latter scatter it.
Even after optimum internal acoustic treatment, most rooms may have some uneven frequency issues, especially in the lower (bass) frequencies. In short this can result in the room itself imposing an increase in heard sound and one frequency and a diminution at another. Thus Room Correction has become a Big Thing in studios, and in mine I have installed a very neat system by Audient.
This system is for evening out the level of all frequencies heard by the mixer seated at the console. It is set up by sampling frequncies emitted by the main monitors at many defined points in space. This is all software-driven, and the process detects problem frequncies, and then applies a correction to the audio delivered by the monitors. In my case there was an area of uneven in the bass area, that is now 'corrected'. And that's it, nil else to be done.
